| JANUARY 23, 2011 A Mountaineeers hike. We drove past fields
of swans and snow geese in the Skagit Valley to the top of Whidbey
Island and stopped at Deception Pass to admire the views along the way.
It was misting lightly when we started our hike through the prairie. We
hiked first along the bluff, then descended a steep trail to the beach.
We kept our lunch break short because of the cool, wet weather, then
hiked the beach to the parking area. Along the way we saw a sea lion
bobbing in the water, but it was too far away to get a good photo. As we
hiked back up alongside the prairie, a juvenile bald eagle flew above
us. We finished our hike with a visit to Jacob Ebey’s cabin and the
blockhouse at the cemetery.
