Elwha River
Humes Ranch
| OCTOBER 13 - 14, 2007 - Our Mountaineers group dwindled to
three by the time we got started on this backpack trip. It was so
foggy when we left Seattle on Saturday morning that there were no views
from the ferry, but by the time we reached the Hood Canal Bridge, the
sky was clear and the sun was bright. This outing was planned as a
fall colors hike, and we were not disappointed. As we left the
trailhead at 10:50 a.m. and headed down the Rica Canyon trail to Goblin
Gates, we were surrounded by brilliant trees and the bright blue of the
Elwha River. There were many tents in the meadows below Humes
Ranch, but we were fortunate to find a perfect campsite in the woods.
After a lazy afternoon, an evening hike took us across the bridge over
the Elwha River at the Grand Canyon and about a mile up through the
woods on the Dodger Point trail. We set no records getting up and
breaking camp the next morning, and I reached the trailhead exactly 24
hours after we set out on our trip. From there, a brief hike up
the road and down the short but steep trail to Lake Mills seemed like an
appropriate way to end the trip.
