Orcas Island Weekend
| MAY 3 -4, 2008 A Mountaineers CHSs "two-fer"
weekend on Orcas Island.
We caught a mid-day ferry out of Anacortes and stayed in a furnished
vacation house in Moran State Park. The vacation house featured
heat, hot water, electricity, a complete kitchen and accommodations for
up to eight people. Considering that we could have opted to
camp in tents on this cool, rainy weekend, these were pretty luxurious
digs indeed. Deer grazed in the meadow outside of the house, and
on Sunday morning one came up to a window and peered in at me.
Dinner the first evening was pasta and salad cooked at the vacation
house, but after hiking many hours on Saturday we opted to go out for
"the best burgers in town" on the second evening. A few friendly
games of Scrabble each evening led plans for a rematch in July at the
Soda Springs campout.
In addition to our official CHS hikes (Mount Constitution on Saturday and Turtleback Mountain on Sunday), we also hiked along Cascade Creek to see the waterfalls and drove to Olga to hike in Obstruction Bay State Park. |
