| JANUARY 24 - 25, 2009 A Mountaineers backpack trip.
Although I've backpacked in cold weather before, this was my first real
experience camping in winter conditions. We hiked in about 1/2
mile and chose a snow filled meadow for our campsite. After
setting up our tents, we created a kitchen area and dug a snow shelter,
then headed out at dusk for a hike up the short but steep hill to the
top of the ridge. A campfire cheered our kitchen while we ate,
then we retreated to the warmth of our tents around 9:00. It
snowed lightly in the night, and the meadow was clear of our footprints
by the time we woke up to 18º temperatures
and clearing skies. After breaking camp, we hiked out and were
home around noon.
